our story

Cancer has impacted the lives of many of our friends and family.  Reveal was founded in 2012 by Claire Weston and Casey Laris with a vision towards pathology driven by data.  Our team is creating artificial intelligence technologies for whole slide pathology images that increase accuracy, reproducibility and scale.  If the technology we’re building today had been available 15 years ago, a cancer misdiagnosis in Casey’s own family would likely have been caught.  We see that by taking a quantitative approach, the data generated by our tools  benefits preclinical research, clinical trials, and ultimately patients.

Claire Weston

Founder & CEO

Dr. Claire Weston is an accomplished and dedicated
scientific leader with a track record of success in cancer research. She was awarded a Ph.D. in Cell Biology from Cambridge University in the U.K. and has led teams and projects focused on cancer
biomarkers in both large pharma and start-up
environments. Claire founded Reveal Biosciences in 2012 and the company has since demonstrated strong year-on-year growth. She has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in leading journals including Science, and is a respected
member of multiple professional organizations
including the Digital Pathology Association.

Casey Laris

Co-Founder & CTO

Casey Laris, CTO, leads the machine learning development of AI-based diagnostics at Reveal. He is a world leader in high-throughput biological computer vision and has been at the forefront of analyzing big data sets from automated microscopy in pathology. Casey developed patented high-throughput microscopy technology at UCSD and productized it in a venture-backed start-up that was later acquired by Beckman-Coulter. There he was Global Product Manager for high content microscopy, reagents and software, leading both the world-wide roll-out and follow-on clinical-ready instrumentation development. Casey helped further develop these computer vision tools at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute with commercialization by Biovia. Casey lead the applications and engineering team at Vala Sciences to create several novel automated high throughput microscope-based systems.  Casey holds a BS from UC San Diego.

Ami Lau

Director of Operations

Ami Lau is a senior member of the Reveal team and leads Operations and Human Resources. Ami is responsible for client satisfaction, efficient operations and maintaining a collaborative and innovative company culture. With 15 years of previous Human Resources Management experience at National Instruments and other large companies, Ami is focused on scalability as Reveal continues to grow.  Ami holds a Master’s degree in Management from the College of Notre Dame and a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Psychology from the University of Maryland.

Sara Becker Catania

Director of Product Development

Dr. Becker Catania received her PhD in Experimental Pathology from the University of California, Los Angeles. Her postdoctoral training studying the selected specification of neural stem cells along neural and glial lineages was performed as a Giannini Foundation Fellow at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute/Mental Retardation Research Center. She also held a joint appointment as a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois Chicago and the Hines VA Hospital and was a recipient of an Illinois Regenerative Medicine Institute grant for her work with neural stem cells in models of Multiple Sclerosis. Dr. Becker Catania has extensive experience in microscopy and histology, as well as developing antibodies and reagents for microscopy. During her tenure at eBioscience, Affymetrix, and Thermo Fisher Scientific, she built and lead a team dedicated to the development of immunology-focused reagents for flow cytometry and microscopy applications.

Xin Qi

Lead Data Scientist

Dr. Qi leads the Data Team at Reveal Biosciences developing computer-assisted decision support tools for digital pathology. Dr. Qi has extensive expertise in the development and deployment of large scale analytics in computational pathology, pattern recognition, data mining, machine learning, and deep learning. She got her Ph. D. in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in 2008. Dr. Qi continued her research as an Assistant Professor at Rutgers University in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, focused on computational pathology and its applications. This work resulted in numerous publications that advanced the field of artificial intelligence in pathology. More recently, Dr. Qi was a Senior AI Scientist at PaigeAI. Her career objectives are to utilize her deep domain knowledge and latest technologies in medical and healthcare applications to significantly impact patients’ diagnosis, precision treatment, and prognosis and enhance patients’ care.

Daniel Schroen

Commercial Lead, R&D

As part of his general leadership role in the company’s sales and marketing efforts, Daniel Schroen, PhD oversees product lifecycle and drives the opportunity funnel. His life science experience includes multi-channel marketing, product management and business development in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, CDMO, drug discovery and basic research industries. At Reveal, Dan heads commercial efforts for imageDx NASH, the company’s leading AI-based platform for liver disease.

Susan Kelly

Histology Group Leader

Susan is an ASCP board certified Histotechnologist with a certification in Lab Management and a qualification in Immunohistochemistry.  She started her histology training at St. John’s Hospital School for Histotechnology followed by a Bachelor of Art degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Illinois.  Her 35 year career started in the hospital clinical setting but found Susan moving into various research positions to learn the latest cutting edge applications.  She has held previous histology management positions at BD Pharmingen, Ionis Pharmaceuticals, Compass Dermatopathology and Organovo.  At Reveal Biosciences Susan leads the growing histology team in all aspects of diverse histologic techniques.

Cory Roberts

CEO, ProPath

Cory is the President and CEO of ProPath, one of the largest physician-owned pathology companies in the US. ProPath comprises nearly 50 physicians and over 400 employees serving patients in 45 states plus several foreign countries. ProPath has a nationwide sales force and medically directs 25 hospitals. Cory is also an advisor to Glenview Capital Management (London & New York), and serves on the Graduate Medical Education Committee for the College of American Pathologists. He has published numerous peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, and has testified before Congress regarding the laboratory workflow shortage.

Christine Valladolid

Executive Direction, Kaiser Permanente

Christine is the Executive Director of Enterprise Leadership and Organizational Effectiveness at Kaiser Permanente. She has been with KP for more than a decade and has served in organizational strategy, technology governance, and program management. Before joining KP, she worked in technology consulting at Capgemini. She holds a doctorate in Organizational Leadership from Pepperdine University, an M.B.A. from Vanderbilt University and a B.A. from Penn State. She is an adjunct professor at the University of Redlands and teaches courses in the university’s Healthcare Administration and Project Management programs.
